KiwiSaver in retirement
Reaching retirement age is a significant milestone — and one of the best things about KiwiSaver is the flexibility it gives you when you get there.
When can you access your KiwiSaver savings?
You can access your KiwiSaver savings from age 65. At that point, your account is unlocked and you can make withdrawals whenever you need to*.
If you decide to keep working after 65, you can continue making employee contributions. Your employer doesn’t have to contribute, but many do, so it’s worth checking with them.
You can also continue making voluntary contributions at any time, regardless of whether you’re working or not.
No obligation to withdraw
Your account stays open and invested until you decide what to do. There’s no deadline.
Employee contributions
If you’re still working you can continue making employee contributions. Some employers will also keep contributing.
Voluntary contributions
You can keep making voluntary contributions regardless of whether you’re working or not.
Government contribution
Once you turn 65, you’re no longer eligible for the annual government contribution.

There’s no rush to withdraw. For many New Zealanders, retirement can last decades, and keeping your savings invested can be one of the most effective ways to make them last.
Your money keeps working
Your savings stay invested across a diversified mix of assets, which can work harder for you than a standard bank account.
You can keep contributing
If you're still working, you can choose to keep adding to your KiwiSaver account.
You stay in control
You can make withdrawals whenever you need to. Minimum withdrawal amounts apply.
